A new look at Cognitive Impairment
One of the most comprehensive industry wide studies ever done on long term care claims has recently been released. One of the findings show that almost half of the people who qualify for long term care claims have some sort of cognitive impairment.
While most people only associate Alzheimers disease with the term cognitive impairment, there are many other causes such as stoke which an individual really doesnt have control over. But focusing only on Alzheimers for a moment, it is starling to see the financial impact this one disease has.
This recent study shows that Alzheimers is now the leading cause of Nursing Home claims - 22%. Followed by Injury and Circulatory with 14% and 13% respectively.
What the study doesnt show is that more than 7 of 10 people with Alzheimers live at home. Family and friends provide almost 75% of the home care. The remainder is paid care costing an average of $12,500 per year.
